CRITICISM FOR DEBATE

THE GOOD CONVERSATION:

Can we talk about artistic quality concepts in new ways?

Can we meet the performing artist’s work more openly with curiosity, wonder and inquisitiveness?
Instead of killing it with stars, can we think about the work, reflect on it together with its creator and thus give it a new life?

Over two evenings in September and November, The Experimental Station and Independent Performing Artists want to create a different debate format where we rise above concepts such as success or failure to talk about the expression and development of the performing arts.
With the “artistic conversation” on September 27 with the working title “Critique in the workshop”, choreographer and dancer Tim Matiakis takes us into his workshop to explore a given topic or question in the performing arts.
We hope for a debate where the conversation can open up new ways of giving constructive criticism, and where the performance result and product are not on the agenda.too often it becomes about selling tickets, and that pressure can limit the artistic work and our creativity.the conversation can instead be about process, the artistic investigations, new inventions, and intentions and about where the performing arts are going.
The strength of this debate format is the direct encounter with the artist on the floor showing “Work in Progress”, providing a shared art experience as a starting point for the conversation.

With the artistic conversation on November 29th “Criticism in the public space”, we invite author, writer and critic Michael Svennevig to a joint conversation about writing with an investigative approach to the work and meeting the performing artist’s work as curiously and openly as possible and letting the work escape definition.
We hope that with “the good conversation” we can create a dialog about what performing arts is and does and can become, with artistic breakthroughs, challenging aesthetics and genre complexity.
